Chicago Cubs shortstop, and former All-Star, Starlin Castro was arrested in the Dominican Republic on Saturday in regard to a nightclub shooting that injured six people. Castro, 24, was reportedly only brought in for questioning, but this is the exact opposite of what the Cubs need from their young talent moving forward.

With emerging talent, and substantial additions made to the roster, the Cubs are in a prime position to start making noise in 2015. The noise surrounding Castro’s arrest is in direct contrast to the “Cub Way” instilled by President of Baseball Operations, Theo Epstein.

Castro has been rumored in trade talks with infield prospects Javier Baez, Addison Russell and Arismendy Alcántara poised to make a splash in the major leagues. Getting arrested in relation to a shooting incident does not help Castro’s image or trade value heading into a season of expected improvement for the North Siders.

It is time for Castro to grow up. He is now considered one of the veterans on the Cubs’ roster, and needs to develop into a leader on and off the field to ensure the development of Chicago’s young talent. Castro has been successful during spurts throughout his career in the major leagues, but has been consistently inconsistent at the plate, and lackadaisical on defense.

The Cubs need leaders on their roster now more than ever, and Castro is receding further away from becoming one of those mature, poised leaders. It will be interesting to see how new manager Joe Maddon addresses this situation moving forward.
