For years, the Detroit Tigers have been built around solid starting pitching and a intimidating lineup. With Rick Porcello traded and Max Scherzer probably lost to free agency, they will need their lineup to be even better this season. Though they have added power with Yoenis Cespedes, they will be in a lot of trouble if Cabrera misses any time.
If he is injured and misses time as some reports are indicating, the entire lineup will be weakened. Without one of the best players in the planet in the lineup, the Tigers will greatly struggle to score runs. Though Cespedes and Victor Martinez will be in the heart of the order and others will have another year under their belt, the loss of Cabrera’s bat can be comparable to the Green Bay Packers trying to win a game without Aaron Rodgers. Wins will not come easy.
The other issue with losing Cabrera is the strengthened American League Central. Not only will the Tigers need to deal with the pesky Kansas City Royals and the always dangerous Cleveland Indians, but the division has improved from top to bottom. The once rebuilding Chicago White Sox have made several moves that have turned them from pretenders to contenders, and even the lowly Minnesota Twins have hope with both a new manager and new acquisitions.
With Cabrera in the heart of the order, the Tigers’ lineup packs as much punch as they have ever had, but without him, they will greatly struggle. Without the presence of the three-time batting champion, the Tigers would be playing catch-up for a majority of the season, and most likely spend October on the outside looking in for the first time in four years.
