No position on the New York Mets’ roster has gotten more attention this offseason than shortstop. Wilmer Flores is the current shortstop, but the Mets continue to look for an answer elsewhere. The Mets do have some promising shortstops in their farm system, just not any who can help by the start of the 2015 season. Here are the Mets’ top five shortstop prospects heading into 2015.

5. Luis Guillorme

Guillorme is still a few years away from factoring into the Mets' plans at shortstop, but he's had two solid seasons to begin his minor league career. He stands out the most defensively, which will help him move up the ladder, but his future will depend on how well he hits. Guillorme doesn't have much power, but if he hits for a good average and gets on base, his defense may be able to carry him to the big leagues.

Ramos was arguably the best defensive shortstop available in last year's draft, but concerns about his hitting caused him to fall to the third round, where the Mets took him. He did get better offensively over the course of his first professional season last year, so there is reason to feel optimistic about his hitting. He's only 19 and a long way from the majors.

3. Matt Reynolds

Reynolds is the only shortstop prospect the Mets have with a chance to play in the majors in 2015. He came alive offensively in 2014, and his defense continues to improve to the point where he could handle playing there every day in the big leagues. Reynolds will return to Triple-A at the start of 2015, and if he continues to produce offensively the way he did last year, he'll be an option at shortstop if the Mets need him.

2. Gavin Cecchini

Cecchini had an up-and-down 2014 season in A-ball, but he finished the season strong and started to show a better approach and a little more power. He has the defensive skills to be a major league shortstop, and if he can continue to improve his offense, he has a chance to be the Mets' everyday shortstop one day. However, even though he'll start 2015 in Double-A, he's still more than a year away from the majors.

Rosario is arguably the best athlete in the Mets' farm system, and he may have the highest ceiling of any prospect they have. The Mets are high on him, and some have even made comparisons to the likes of Hanley Ramirez. However, Rosario is still 19 and a long way from helping the Mets in the big leagues. He did have a nice season in 2014, showing flashes of his talent, and he'll be a prospect to watch closely in 2015.
