The New York Mets' 5 Biggest Disappointments So Far This Season

Despite some ups and downs, the New York Mets have managed to put together a solid season in 2015. But it’s intriguing to think about what could have been had they not been let down by injuries or underperforming players. Here are the Mets’ five biggest disappointments that have held them back this season.

5. Alex Torres

Overall, Torres' numbers look fine, but after the Mets gave up two solid prospects to get him, his performance has been quite shaky at times. He's certainly had his moments, but there have also been times when he truly can't find the strike zone and has been bailed out by the rest of the bullpen. Whenever he takes the mound, Mets fans can't be too confident that he's going to get the job done.

4. The Bench

With all the injuries the Mets have suffered this year, they have not gotten nearly enough support from the bench. Both Kirk Nieuwenhuis and Anthony Recker are down in Triple-A after struggling so much, while John Mayberry struggled to hit the first two months of the season as well. Eric Campbell was fine for a brief period, but his production is now limited, as the Mets search for some bench support to help manage their injuries.

3. Jon Niese

Outside of Dillon Gee, who's no longer on the roster, Niese has been the weak link of the Mets' rotation. Niese said before the season he's the healthiest he's been in years, but the results don't back that up. Niese's velocity is way down, and he's almost abandoned the curveball that got him to the big leagues and the results have not been good. His strikeouts are down, he has just three wins and his ERA is the highest it's been since 2011.

2. Michael Cuddyer

The Mets brought in Cuddyer to be a difference maker in the middle of their lineup, but he's had a largely pedestrian season. With David Wright out, the Mets have needed something special out of Cuddyer, but he hasn't really delivered, as his OPS is barely above .700. For a player who's hitting in the middle of the order and making a middle-of-the-order salary, Cuddyer's numbers are a big disappointment.

Say what you will about the other players on this list, but at least they've taken the field. The same can't be said for Mejia, who is in the midst of an 80-game PED suspension. With Bobby Parnell just now coming back from injury, Vic Black still not fit to return and several other pitchers injured, the Mets' bullpen could have really used Mejia for the past two months. Instead, because of his suspension, he's been a complete non-factor.

There's probably no classification for 95 mph pitches with that kind of movement, so let's just call it the Thor-level filth.
