For just the third time this season, the New York Mets won a series on the road. After splitting the first two games with the Los Angeles Dodgers, Steven Matz and the Mets came out victorious in dominant fashion Sunday afternoon, winning 8-0.
The homegrown Matz didn’t quite impress with his bat like he did in his debut last Sunday but that’s alright since the remainder of the Mets actually backed him up. On the mound, however, he tossed six shutout innings while striking out eight and walking only two. As far as his pitching is concerned, Matz actually improved since his debut.
While the Mets can almost always count on a performance like this from their starters, getting eight runs isn’t something they aren’t used to. However, a dominant win like this — and a series win against a tough opponent — can help the Mets turn things around.
Curtis Granderson, Daniel Murphy, Wilmer Flores, Ruben Tejada, and Juan Lagares all had multi-hit games. The best of that group — Murphy — is batting .287, so if they could keep the hits coming, it would help them all dramatically. The fact that they’re all likely penciled into the starting lineup for the foreseeable future would also make their resurgences all the more important.
Perhaps the one caveat to a win like this is the limited time remaining before the All-Star break. If the Mets do in fact gain some momentum going into the San Francisco Giants and Arizona Diamondbacks series they would likely just want to keep playing, yet their brief vacation begins after the series against Arizona. But that’s the scheduling, and the Mets are going to have to deal with that. Any momentum is better than no momentum.
The short-term goals should be to just finish out the half strong. As a .500 team back by only a few games, each win right now is so crucial. This is generally the time when the Mets fade in the season; if they’re to remain competitive in the winnable NL East, this upcoming week will be vital. It’s possible that Travis d’Arnaud will be healthy by the end of the break, and maybe David Wright will even be further along with rehab, which would be huge for the lineup and for morale.
Before they get to that, the Mets just need to keep playing well. In the meantime, Panic City will be a little calmer.
