The Boston Red Sox are in a unique position right now because being six and a half games out, they are really neither buyers nor sellers. They are sort of in mediocre limbo. But let's just say that they do somehow have a bit of a run in them during the second half and gain some ground. Here are five potential trades Boston could make at the deadline.

By the way, every one of these trades will involve Boston prospects. Let's look at the list.

5. Cole Hamels-Philadelphia Phillies

This trade has been discussed almost forever from what it seems. Hamels would give Boston that ace they are looking for. He also would be under club control until 2016. However, he will not be cheap. He's got a contract at about $ 144 million. He would solve the starting pitching problem, though.

Boston might want to consider a package of Blake Swihart, Henry Owens and perhaps Rafael Devers, a very promising third baseman.

4. Sonny Gray-Oakland Athletics

Gray is another pitcher who might be unavailable. However, he does play for the Oakland Athletics, so sooner or later he is going to price himself off this team. It might be a good opportunity to get something for him now while you can.

Henry Owens might be a good trade; he is younger and Oakland could have him under club control for a while. Gray in a Boston rotation with Eduardo Rodriguez could be a dynamic pair against any team.

3. Jose Quintana-Chicago White Sox

You might not have heard of Quintana, but he is a very good, promising starting pitcher. He throws lefty and he has a very live arm. His won-loss record often doesn't look like much, but last season he had 178 strikeouts and a 3.32 ERA. He also would be young and under club control for a few years which Boston prefers.

The White Sox need offense. Blake Swihart might not have a position next year. He could be a dynamic addition for Chicago.

2. Carter Capps-Miami Marlins

Maybe the most unorthodox delivery you will ever see is Carter Capps' of the Miami Marlins. He throws heat which is something Boston really needs, as well as another trustworthy bullpen arm. Miami is done; they aren't going anywhere. How about Rafael Devers who is absolutely raking it down in the low minors? He could be a player who along with Giancarlo Stanton could be a cornerstone of their franchise.

1. Tyler Clippard-Oakland Athletics

Again, looking for help for the Boston bullpen and again looking at the Oakland Athletics. Tyler Clippard is currently their closer, although he has also been a setup man before. The Red Sox could use him in the seventh or eighth innings and he has that strikeout potential that Boston really doesn't have in their core of relievers. They might not even need to give up a top prospect to get this one done either.

We'll see later on this month.
