Mariano Rivera no longer pitches for the New York Yankees. Enter Sandman no longer echoes throughout Yankee Stadium when their closer makes his way to the mound. That, however, has not kept their bullpen from emerging this season.
With two of baseball’s best relievers in Andrew Miller and Dellin Betances, the Bronx Bombers have been solid on the back end. Even though Miller has missed time due to injury, the back end has held up well. Now, the team is reportedly interested in acquiring closer Craig Kimbrel from the San Diego Padres if the team is looking to dump his salary.
Having Kimbrel, Miller and Betances in the back of the bullpen would make the team virtually unbeatable if they take a lead into the seventh inning.
Even though the move is considered a long shot, it’s not impossible. The Yankees are loaded with mid-level prospects, which may be enough to land Kimbrel if the Padres are just looking to get rid of his contract.
The deal would make sense for the Yankees on a number of levels. Kimbrel would likely step into the closer role because of his experience. Meanwhile, Miller and Betances could both be used as setup men, with each being used in different situations. Since Miller is a lefty and Betances is a righty, it would give the team a lot of flexibility in the seventh and eighth innings.
Should the team hold onto the division and make the playoffs this season, they’re going to need a strong bullpen. They already have one. With Kimbrel, they will have an elite one. Everything seems to be falling into place for the Yankees this season. Add Kimbrel to the roster and New York can legitimately start dreaming about a 28th World Series title.
