I have changed my mind about Rich Hill. At first, I thought that it was a great story and that he would definitely catch on somewhere next season. However, given the way that Hill has been pitching recently it would be somewhat of a mistake to let him go. He could be very useful for the Boston Red Sox in 2016.
One of Boston’s biggest issues this season is that they have not had enough pitching and no depth to speak of. If Dave Dombrowski can go out and get a front-line starting pitcher to head the rotation, then that could change a lot. Suddenly, there might be a number of candidates for five positions. Boston should subscribe to the adage that you can never have enough pitching.
A big reason why Boston should hold on to Hill is because of Clay Buchholz. Buchholz should be back next season and can be a very solid No. 2 pitcher. However, he has a history of being as fragile as a glass ornament and you can’t bank on him to play an entire season without him getting hurt at some point. Hill could be the long relief, spot starter and a very solid insurance policy if and when Buchholz goes down again.
I think the question would be if Hill would go for that sort of role. I just think that backing up Buchholz almost guarantees that he would get some starts at some point. He is just pitching too well to give him up.
Having another lefty kicking around wouldn’t hurt either.
