The kid is here to stay. Zach Davies came over from the Baltimore Orioles in exchange for Gerardo Parra. The return on that deal will determine if the Milwaukee Brewers have a successful 2016 season or not.
The Brewers are coming off a season barely could have gone worse for them. The Chicago Cubs surged back into relevancy. Kyle Lohse had the worst season of his career. To top it all off, the Brewers had to say goodbye to Parra and third baseman Aramis Ramirez.
The good news is that the Brewers are ready to turn the page to 2016. Wily Peralta will start the season as the No. 1 starter. He only made 20 starts last season and had a WHIP of 1.54. He is not ace material. The No. 2 starter will be Jimmy Nelson, another young pitcher. He will give Davies a run for his money as to which pitcher will have a better 2016 season. Nelson burst onto the scene in 2015 and will be counted on in 2016.
The rest of the staff after those three will be Matt Garza and some less talented individual. Garza missed six starts and threw less than 150 innings in 2016. That’s why Davies becomes so important. In addition to being able to develop, Nelson and Davies will be relied upon to eat innings. Peralta is a question mark and Garza is on the tail end of his career.
Davies will need to be a true ace for the Brewers to have any chance this year. In a stacked division he may need to produce near to Cy Young numbers. He is their best shot at a single pitcher carrying this team since C.C. Sabathia. It’s too much to ask of the young pitcher, but he truly is the Brewers’ only hope to compete in 2016.
The Brewers aren’t that far away from where the Cubs were just a few years ago. They have too many young prospects making their debuts at once. Unfortunately for the Brewers, 2017 looks like the boom year for the talent to arrive. In 2016, Brewers fans can enjoy their young ace in Davies, and get ready for 2017.
