When the Colorado Rockies signed free agent outfielder Gerardo Parra, it wasn’t a secret around MLB that they would then be looking to deal either Carlos Gonzalez, Charlie Blackmon or Corey Dickerson. After scouring the market for the best deal, the Rockies finally found a match with the Tampa Bay Rays as the Rockies will send Dickerson and a minor leaguer to Tampa in exchange for LHP Jake McGee and a minor leaguer.

This deal makes a ton of sense for the Rays. Last season, Kevin Cash‘s club finished 25th in MLB in runs scored, but still managed to win 80 games because of their brilliant pitching staff. Fixing the offense was obviously the team’s No. 1 offseason priority, but that’s easier said than done with the Rays’ payroll. Being able to acquire a great hitter like Dickerson while only giving up McGee is a haul for general manager Matthew Silverman.
For the Rockies, they continue to do things that make zero sense. I’m not sure how they think this is a good deal for them. Sure, McGee will be their closer, but how do you trade one of your top young players and not get at least one major league starting pitcher in return? With Jorge De La Rosa as your ace, it should’ve been essential that a starter be in the deal.
Now with Dickerson, Evan Longoria, Steven Souza Jr. and the progressing Logan Forsythe, the Rays suddenly have the nucleus to be a decent lineup. With that pitching staff in tow, it wouldn’t surprise me to see the Rays give the Boston Red Sox, Toronto Blue Jays and New York Yankees fits all season long.
