With February upon us, teams are trying to put the finishing touches on their rosters before the start of spring training. According to rumors, the Washington Nationals have interest in trading for catcher Jonathan Lucroy from the Milwaukee Brewers. The Nationals are on Lucroy’s no-trade list and the Brewers have said they are not shopping him, but if Washington can find a way to acquire Lucroy, it would be a huge addition for them before the start of the season.
Catcher was the biggest weakness on Washington’s roster last season, and that may be the case again in 2016 if the Nationals don’t find an upgrade before the start of the season. Wilson Ramos had the worst season of his career in 2015, which coincided with him playing the most games in a single season he ever has, indicating he is far more productive in a backup role. Jose Lobaton also had the worst season of his career while serving as Washington’s backup. Obviously, the Nationals need some help behind the plate, and Lucroy would represent a significant upgrade over what is currently on the roster.
Lucroy’s overall numbers in 2015 were down from previous seasons. But after slumping in April and missing all of May, Lucroy was productive offensively from June through the end of the season, so there’s little reason to be concerned about his offensive numbers continuing to drop. Lucroy was an All-Star in 2014 and was one of the better catchers in the National League the two years before that as well, and he could become a key piece of the puzzle if the Nationals can find a way to trade for him.
The Nationals are on Lucroy’s no-trade list, so if they can work out a deal with the Brewers they would have to convince him to come to Washington. But if Lucroy wants to play for a team with playoff potential, the Nationals certainly fit that description. Moreover, if Lucroy were to come to Washington and become the team’s primary catcher, the Nationals would be in much better position to compete for a playoff spot in 2016.
