5 Reasons Why The New York Yankees Can Win 2016 World Series

The New York Yankees undoubtedly have their eye on the future and have made that clear time and time again. They have not invested in a single Major League free agent this offseason, and it is clear they are waiting for the contracts of Mark Teixeira, C.C. Sabathia, Alex Rodriguez and Carlos Beltran to come off the books before spending again. Further, they have held onto their top prospects. The players the Yankees did acquire, Aaron Hicks, Starlin Castro and Aroldis Chapman, all represent upgrades over what the team fielded last year in terms of age and ability. All of this represents a shift in organizational philosophy that actually has the Yankees as a dark horse contender in 2016. Here are five reasons why the Yankees might actually win the 2016 World Series.

5. Not A Bunch Of Old Men

This might be hard to believe, but the Yankees' 40-man roster is actually the 11th youngest team in baseball at 26.9 and the has the youngest average age in the American League East.

Alex Rodriguez, Carlos Beltran and Mark Teixeira all proved they can still play. They just need to stay healthy and put up similar lines to last season, and the Yankees should improve on the 764 runs they scored last season.

3. Starlin Castro

Castro will be better than Stephen Drew was last season. Castro hit .265/.296/.375 in an off year while Drew hit .201/.271/.381. Castro did hit .296 in August and .426 in September. If he comes close to his career numbers the Yankees will be happy.

2. C.C. Sabathia

He emerged as arguably the Yankees’ best pitcher down the stretch, never yielding more than four runs in a game the rest of the season. He pitched to a 3.80 ERA in August and a 2.25 ERA in September. There are lots of questions but some upside here.

Andrew Miller, Dellin Betances and Aroldis Chapman are the three best relief pitchers any team will field next season. All three struck out 100 or more batters last season, the only three relievers to do so. The middle relief has a lot of upside too.
