One of the biggest questions for the New York Yankees entering spring training was who would back up Chase Headley at third base. There were a bunch of potential solutions including using Starlin Castro at third as well as moving Rob Refsnyder there. None seemed to be foolproof, but the Yankees might have their solution.
Manager Joe Girardi recently nixed the idea of moving Castro over to third this spring. This is a wise move. After all, the Yankees’ new starting second baseman has under 260 career innings of experience at his position. It is better to let him focus on becoming as good as he can be at second without moving him all over the diamond.
Refsnyder is a man without a position for the Yankees. He was once considered the second baseman of the future, but the Yankees have always seemed to look elsewhere for answers, as evidenced by them trading Adam Warren for Castro this winter. Then, just before the start of spring training, the Yankees floated the idea of moving Refsnyder to third and possibly turning him into a super utility guy. Given that Refsnyder seemed to struggle a little with learning second base, this move was met with some skepticism.
So far Refsnyder has looked comfortable at third base — perhaps a little more comfortable than many expected. We are, after all, talking about someone who struggled with the move from the outfield to second base. However, credit Refsnyder for his work ethic. He has been working on his defense at second and third and seems to be comfortable at both spots.
Using Refsnyder as a utility guy would be intriguing for the Yankees. It would give them a solid bat that they could plug in at third or second, and possibly even first base or the outfield. His biggest strength has always been his offense, so all he has to do is just play passable defense at third.
The more positions Refsnyder learns the more value he obtains, both as a trade chip and as a member of the Yankees. Right now he is way more valuable to the Yankees as a member of the team. He could prove to be indispensable if he continues to show progress at third base. As things stand at the moment, Refsnyder should break camp with the Yankees and could finally get his shot as a member of the rotating lineup Girardi is sure to feature this season in order to keep the older veterans fresh.
