After former general manager Ben Cherington signed Pablo Sandoval to a five-year $95 million last offseason, he hit .245 with 10 home runs and 47 RBI in the worst season of his career. The Red Sox were hoping that he would show up to spring training with a slimmer figure, but instead, Sandoval arrived looking as big as ever.
Since Dave Dombrowski has taken over, his focus has been spent on rebuilding a horrible pitching staff by acquiring David Price and Craig Kimbrel. While the Red Sox finally have a true ace in Price, he’s followed by Clay Buchholz, Rick Porcello, Joe Kelly and Steven Wright. Overall, that’s still not a sufficient pitching staff to compete in the AL East.
According to recent reports, the San Diego Padres could be a willing trade partner for the Red Sox. The Padres have reportedly sent a scout to take a solid look at Sandoval and the name being discussed who would be sent to the Red Sox is James Shields.

If a trade were to come to fruition, it would make perfect sense for both sides. With the loss of Justin Upton to free agency, the Padres desperately need some offense in the middle of the order. The Red Sox on the other hand, have plenty of offense, and would likely not use Sandoval as a starter anyway. Shields would give them a solid No. 2 behind Price.
It’s unclear how far these talks have gone, but I hope the deal works out for both sides.
