When it comes to the New York Yankees and their bullpen, there are quite a few big names with a lot of hype — and for good reason. There are also quite a few arms in the minor leagues that could have an impact for the Yankees this season, including Conor Mullee.
Mullee, 28, isn’t mentioned when it comes to Yankees prospects. However, he is dominating in Triple-A right now and could enter the Yankees’ bullpen conversation very soon. He would probably have been among the Yankees’ top bullpen arms had he not required Tommy John surgery three times in his young career. Still, the Yankees see something in Mullee that’s caused them to stick with him, and he is rewarding their patience.
With the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Railriders this season, Mullee has posted a 1.02 ERA, .177 batting average against, 0.91 WHIP, is 3-0 and has saved three games in four opportunities. He’s also struck out 23 in 17.2 innings. His minor league totals are also pretty solid. In 89 games since 2010, Mullee has gone 12-6 with a 2.13 ERA and 142 strikeouts in 143.2 innings while holding batters to a .212 average and only allowing six home runs with a 1.05 WHIP.
He is now three years removed from his last Tommy John surgery and is coming off a 2015 campaign that saw him pitch 58.2 innings across three levels with a 2.91 ERA and 1.16 WHIP while striking out 56. It is safe to say his elbow is healthy now, and he is pitching himself into consideration for a MLB roster spot as soon as this season.
After Aroldis Chapman, Dellin Betances and Andrew Miller, the Yankees’ bullpen isn’t set in stone. Chasen Shreve has struggled lately. Johnny Barbato was recently sent down to Triple-A after struggling following a dominant start to the season. Nick Goody has been impressive when he has pitched. Kirby Yates has been, well, exactly what most people thought he would be. James Pazos, Luis Cessa and Tyler Olson are all on call to ride the shuttle, but Mullee should be joining them soon.
The Yankees can add the right-handed Mullee, their 24th round draft pick in 2010, to the 40-man roster simply by moving someone to the 60-day DL, and they do have a few candidates at the moment. Over a full season injuries and ineffectiveness will take their toll on the best of bullpens. Mullee should get consideration for a call-up soon, and he could easily become a fan favorite out of the bullpen. It should be only a matter of time before he gets his shot.
