With the news that Lucas Duda could be out for quite a while with a stress fracture in his back, the New York Mets may have to explore the trade market sooner rather than later for a first baseman. There is no shortage of options, but few that are all that enticing. Here are five players the Mets could look to target in a trade to replace Duda.
5. James Loney
Getty ImagesLoney is cheap and available, so there's little risk in giving him a chance. He has the kind of plate discipline the Mets like, but he's shown little power the last couple of years, making it hard to believe he can replace Duda's production.
4. Chris Carter
Getty ImagesCarter is outperforming his track record this year, so perhaps the Brewers would trade high on him. He would give the Mets a power source, which is nice, but his strikeout rate is high and his defense is questionable, which is not ideal.
3. Brandon Moss/Matt Adams
Scott Rovak - USATODAY SportsSurely the Cardinals don't need both of these guys, so the Mets could acquire one of them. Both are lefties, so if Duda returned there would be a logjam; however, either could fit long term in the event Duda is unable to return this season.
2. Sean Rodriguez
Getty ImagesRodriguez is a backup at several positions in Pittsburgh, but he's not getting a ton of starts. He's having a good offensive year and is a capable first baseman. He could then platoon with Duda and be a super-utility player later in the season.
1. Steve Pearce
Kim Klement - USATODAY SportsThe Rays could be convinced to part with Pearce, who's having a nice offensive season. He's a more than capable fill-in at first base, and he could play third base if needed. Pearce would also be a productive bench player if Duda returns.
