Now seven-year-old Chicago Cubs fan Beckham Zobrist, no relation to Ben, was diagnosed with retinoblastoma back in 2012 and the disease forced doctors to remove his right eye. After suffering through some vicious teasing from some of his schoolmates, Zobrist asked his parents for a new eye, but they told him that it wouldn’t be possible. The young boy then came up with an idea for the next best thing: a Cubs eye.
Zobrist visited Wrigley Field during last week’s series against the Arizona Diamondbacks, and bench coach Dave Martinez gave him a guided tour which included a bat from Kyle Schwarber and a meeting with Anthony Rizzo.
From Fox 8:
“Martinez gave Beck a personal tour. Kyle Schwarber told the young fan, he sadly wasn’t using his bat this year so he offered it as a gift. And Anthony Rizzo came to the dugout to meet the little boy who had gone through such a huge ordeal. He told him, he too was a cancer survivor. The day left him speechless.”
What an amazing story.
