Grading Detroit Tigers' Offseason Acquisition Of Cameron Maybin Through June

Last November, the Detroit Tigers acquired outfielder Cameron Maybin from the Atlanta Braves in exchange for Ian Krol and Gabe Speier. Maybin, of course, was once a highly-touted Tigers prospect who was one of the centerpieces of the package that was sent to the then-Florida Marlins in the Miguel Cabrera deal. Maybin had gone on to play with the San Diego Padres and Braves since then.

At the time the deal to bring Maybin back aboard was made, many thought that it was a solid under-the-radar type of move for the Tigers. While Maybin had never truly evolved into the type of superstar many thought he would be, he was coming off of a solid season with the Braves, hitting .267 with 10 homers and 23 stolen bases. It appeared that he would be a good replacement for the older Rajai Davis and give the team a solid platoon partner for Anthony Gose in center field.

After suffering a wrist injury in spring training, however, Maybin began the season on the sidelines. Since rejoining the team on May 16, though, Maybin has been nothing short of excellent. He has injected some much-needed speed and energy into the lineup to say the very least.

Through 38 games, Maybin has been a hitting machine, slashing .348/.406/.411 with a homer and eight steals. Gose was only hitting .209/.287/.341 before being sent down to Toledo, so Maybin has provided a very big upgrade at the center field position.

Although it is still very early to judge the deal and Maybin may indeed cool off a bit, he has been a tremendous addition to the team up to this point. The Tigers appear to have made an incredibly wise move in reacquiring him.
