San Diego Padres' Petco Park Back To Normal After Rain Turns Field Into A Lake

By Timothy Downs

The San Diego Padres simply haven’t had a ton of luck on their side as a team and franchise through the years. On Monday, a downpour in beautiful Southern California turned Petco Park into a swamp.

It rarely-to-never-rains in San Diego, but Petco Park’s drainage system is typically sufficient when it does. On Monday, however, the grounds crew was preparing to lay new sod down.

From CBS Sports:

San Diego Padres spokeswoman Shana Wilson told FOX 5 an amount of rain had fallen so quickly the drainage was slow to keep up. Field crews do not anticipate any damage from the standing water.

The Padres also noted there was not grass on the field because of a recently hosted monster-truck rally. Presumably, Petco will be in better shape come March 14. That’s when the Padres’ ballpark is set to host the second round of the World Baseball Classic. The second round at Petco lasts until March 18 or 19.

Amazingly, just a day later, the sun was out and all was well once again.
