The Strikeforce heavyweight Grand Prix continues tonight, with Alistair Overeem taking on Fabricio Werdum and Josh Barnett facing Brett Rogers. Here’s a look at the betting lines:
Odds from BetUS Sportsbook. Accurate as of 1030 June 18, 2011
Alistair Overeem (-350) vs Fabricio Werdum (+250)
Pick: Overeem
Werdum needs to get this to the ground somehow. He usually takes people down from the clinch, which is a bad spot to bad against Overeem. It looks like Werdum’s only chance is jumping guard or having Overeem rush into a mistake a la Fedor Emelianenko.
Josh Barnett (-400) vs Brett Rogers (+300)
Pick: Barnett
The big X-factor here is how Barnett fights after such a long period of inactivity against anyone close to the top 10. Rogers is a heavy hitter, but didn’t look so hot in his last fight against Ruben Villareal. Barnett probably takes this to the ground and gets the submission.
Daniel Cormier (-450) vs Jeff Monson (+325)
Pick: Cormier
Cormier is a top prospect while Monson has been a solid vet, but is currently on the decline. Cormier’s wrestling is top tier and he has picked up striking very well.
KJ Noons (-140) vs Jorge Masvidal (+110)
Pick: Noons
Noons has great standup- he’s one of the best strikers at 155. He’s the only fighter to go to decision with Nick Diaz during Diaz’s big win streak, and Noons was outside his regular weight class for that fight. Masvidal has power, but almost all the time in the past, the technical skill > power in striking.
Valentijn Overeem (+115) vs Chad Griggs (-145)
Pick: Overeem
The biggest win Griggs has is over Bobby Lashley. The other Overeem might not be a champ, but he’s a decent enough opponent for the Griggs and Lashleys of the world.
Gesias Cavalcante (“JZ”) (-115) vs Justin Wilcox (-115)
Pick: JZ
JZ is still a great 155er. Wilcox has been doing well with wins over Rodrigo Damn and Vitor Ribeiro, but him and Lyle Beerbolm aren’t quite at serious contender level yet.
