Downfall: Brett Rogers edition
Brett Rogers seemed to be on the cusp of stardom not so long ago- with a knockout of Andrei Arlovski and a fight against Fedor Emelianenko where he put the legend in trouble for a few moments sent “The Grim’s” stock skyrocketing. He got a title shot against Alistair Overeem as a reward.
Unfortunately, Rogers proceeded to get thrashed by Overeem. After a lacklustre performance against Ruben Villareal and a submission loss in round 1 of the Strikeforce heavyweight Grand Prix to Josh Barnett, things started to really go downhill. Rogers was arrested in June for a domestic assault incident. You can see most of the details of the incident on Minnesota’s court services website- a warning though that some of the text may be disturbing. Dana White terminated Rogers from Strikeforce immediately.
Rogers then appeared with his wife in a bizarre interview with Inside MMA (his wife has been refusing to testify in the case) and pleaded guilty to one charge. Looking to get his MMA career back on track, Rogers proceeded to lose to Eddie Sanchez at a Titan Fighting Championships event. Now he has been arrested again for violating the bail conditions of his 1st arrest. If he had a chance at avoiding jail time before, violating bail conditions doesn’t spur sympathetic sentencing. Violating bail conditions in cases such as this usually means that the defendant committed some act of assault/intimidation/threat against the person the court is trying to protect.
Rogers is no longer the 10-0 phenom with all his wins coming by strikes. Instead, he’s someone who admitted to beating his wife and then violated his bail conditions. It’s a sad story of someone who was being groomed to become a champion getting into serious trouble.
