British Heavyweight Boxing: Dead or Disgraced?

Like a punch-drunk veteran British heavyweight boxing is sitting in its corner, weary, bloodied and now largely unnoticed. The flashbulbs are popping on the rim of other rings, in other countries. The fraternity is embarrassed by the British displays and even old ambassadors are distancing themselves. If it stays like this other sports are set to prosper…

The rot set in with the realization that David Haye was not the solution for a dwindling regime. He sloped of whining about a broken pinky-toe and looking loathe to the fact that he had been outclassed by a better boxer, Wladimir Klitschko.

We were told the man had retired, most likely to focus on acting, or training or whatever took his fancy. Many hoped he would not pop up again in the heat of international boxing events.

But he did.

After Vitali Klitschko beat Brit Dereck Chisora last weekend Haye reared his head in the post-bout conference, goading Chisora. The losing heavyweight, who had acted questionably before and after the bout anyway, slapping Klitschko at the weigh-in and allegedly spitting at the Ukrainian at some point, retaliated. A brawl spilled out and blood was dropped.

The Klitschko’s looked on, bemused and most likely delighted that they would not have to deal with characters like these again.

Haye may have been resurfacing because he wished to fight Vitali in the near future. However, with German police questioning Chisora after this incident and threats that the German authorities could prosecute both Brits it is no surprise that the Klitschko management team has since distanced themselves from such suggestions.

Now Haye’s trainer, Adam Booth, has suggested that Haye will remain retired unless Klitschko opts to fight him. Here is the incident that will probably ensure that never happens…

WARNING: this is an embarrassment, and demonstrates why British heavyweight boxing is an international laughing stock.
