UFC News: Daniel Cormier will Face Frank Mir: Tim Sylvia is Shocked
Kyle Terada-US PRESSWIRE

It was announced a few weeks ago that the Strikeforce heavyweight grand-prix winner Daniel Cormier will be facing UFC heavyweight and former champion Frank Mir. This will definitely be an interesting match-up for both fighters. Cormier has excellent striking and Mir has excellent submissions, but who will control the fight? This is old news but I found Sylvia’s below comments interesting.

Enough with the fight discussion though.

Tim Sylvia originally thought he would be chosen to fight Cormier, but that proved to be wrong. Sylvia has recently shown disappointment in Dana White’s decision. Sylvia went on to say the following in an interview with “The MMA hour”

“I don’t know. I think the UFC might have got ahead of themselves and they really couldn’t find anybody to fight Cormier, so, they had asked us and we agreed to it and I think after we agreed to it, they were able to talk Frank into doing it and they probably thought Frank was a better fit for it than myself. I think they’d like to see Daniel win and I think he beats Frank, but he would lose to me. I don’t know that he (Frank) is an easier fight than (me) but, he is still in the limelight, he is still in the UFC . Frank is definitely better on the ground than I am, but I think my takedown defense and my striking ability would make a tougher fight for DC definitely. But, he is definitely a rising star right now and he would be difficult for anybody really.”

Does Tim Sylvia think he is still UFC material? He has won 7 of his last 8 fights but they have been to opponents of a lesser caliber. Tim Sylvia said in the above statement that Cormier would beat Mir but Cormier would lose to himself(Sylvia).

It is a very surprising comment in my opinion.

Mir is still competing and winning against the top fighters in the UFC heavyweight division. Sylvia hasn’t fought the worlds best in over 3 years. Don’t get me wrong, Sylvia is a great fighter but I just don’t see him fighting at the level that he was in his UFC days.
