After losing twice against Ben Henderson, fans and media have been clamoring for Frankie Edgar to move down a weight class to featherweight for a showdown with Jose Aldo.
Fans get what they want in the UFC……. sometimes.
Frankie Edgar will fight Jose Aldo at UFC 153 in Rio de Janerio, Brazil.
Erik Koch is out at with an undisclosed injury. It is another high-profile amongst a litany of other injuries this summer. It has decimated several cards and cost the UFC plenty of money, culminating with the cancellation of UFC 151 last week.
For Edgar, it is a great opportunity. Without an injury ‘The Answer” would need to win one or two fights to garner a title shot, especially at a different division.
Though many believe Edgar won a decision against Henderson, it is still in the loss column. And Edgar clearly lost the first contest against Henderson.
For Aldo, defeating Edgar does a lot for his career. Edgar is the huge name that Aldo hasn’t defeated since Urijah Faber. That is not a criticism of Aldo; featherweight is just not full of big stars as other divisions are.
A convincing win moves Aldo up the pound-for-pound list.
The fans are the overwhelming victor though.
UFC 153 was already stacked with good fights. The main event is now a bigger fight. It is one that fans have wanted to see for a while now.
Edgar is a fan favorite. His toughness is never questioned.
With Aldo returning home to Brazil, the biggest question is: will Aldo run into the crowd again? Aldo jumped into the crowd at UFC 142 and draped himself with a Brazilian flag.
It was one of the most special moments in MMA history.
This one is interesting.
