UFC 165 features an important bantamweight interim title fight between Renan Barao and Eddie Wineland. Both of these bantamweights are the best in the division, and it should be a war from start to finish.
Wineland comes into this interim bout off some momentum, as his latest UFC victories ended with victories over the likes of Scott Jorgensen and Brad Pickett. Wineland is a veteran of the sport, and has always been one of the most powerful punchers in this division. This power was showcased in his bout against Jorgensen, as he was able to deliver a sensational knockout in the second round. Wineland has also made strides in his wrestling game, and he is becoming a well-rounded fighter with each fight.
Barao comes into this bout off a sterling performance against Michael McDonald. This bout was full of action, and Barao was able to put a stamp on the bout, finishing McDonald with an arm triangle in the fourth round. This was Barao’s first defense of his interim title, a title he won when he defeated Urijah Faber by way of decision back in 2012. Out of 32 fights, Barao has only lost once, which is one of the most impressive records and winning streaks in all of MMA. He seems unstoppable right now, but he faces a stern test in Wineland, who can knock any man out if he connects flush.
It should be a great fight, whether it’s contested on the feet or on the ground. The winner solidifies their status as being one of the best bantamweights in the world, and will more than likely challenge champ Dominick Cruz to unify the titles.
