Shane Del Rosario, the former Strikeforce and UFC rising star of the heavyweight division, has died. The UFC confirmed on Monday night. He was 30 years old.
The UFC issued the following statement:
“The Ultimate Fighting Championship mourns the tragic loss of heavyweight competitor Shane Del Rosario, who has passed away at the age of 30. Del Rosario suffered a heart attack on Tuesday, Nov. 26 as a result of what doctors believe to be a congenital heart disorder, according to his manager Jason House.
The entire organization sends its deepest condolences to Shane’s family and friends. “
Rosario was in the hospital for two weeks after suffering a heart attack. Wrestlingobserver.com reported that Del Rosario suffered from a rare heart ailment called Long QT Syndrome.
Rosario’s roommate, Ian McCall, tweeted the following message: “RIP to one of the best people I’ve ever had the honor to have in my life and call my best friend. @shanedelrosario helped me threw the toughest time in my life and helped me raise my daughter. Love you big fella.”
Del Rosario had an 11-2 MMA record and was 8-1 as a professional kickboxer.
He was the first American to win the WBC Muay Thai heavyweight championship.
