“The Korean Zombie” Chan Sung Jung is taking two years away from the UFC and the sport of MMA in order to fulfill a mandatory military service required to all South Korean male citizens. Jung is by far one of the UFC’s most exciting fighters and will be sadly missed by the UFC, the MMA community and the many fans he has gained.
Jung adopted the nickname “The Korean Zombie” due to his dangerous yet impelling fighting style of a continuous forward movement despite taking heavy hits. Fans love and appreciate fighters who put their bodies on the line to entertain and to win in spectacular fashion. His incredible fighting style has also led to an MMA record of 13 wins and only four losses. His wins include three knockouts and eight submissions, holding notable victories over Leonard Garcia, Mark Hominick and Dustin Poirier.
Besides his exceptional MMA record, his fighting style and his exciting characteristics have also led to him earning fight of the night and fight of the year in 2010 at WEC 48 in his split decision loss against Garcia. However, he soon avenged this loss in his first fight in the UFC where he beat Garcia via a twister, the first time in the history of the UFC someone had gained victory with this submission. This win earned him the UFC submission of the night as well as the 2011 submission of the year. Jung then went on to gain the knockout of the night award in his victory over Hominick and then gained fight of the night, submission of the night and fight of the year when he submitted Poirier via a D’arce choke.
“The Korean Zombie”, still at the young age of 27, will hopefully return to the sport of mixed martial arts after his military service is complete. He has gained two fights of the year and one submission of the year showing just how much of a loss he will be. He recently lost a bout for the UFC featherweight championship, but this loss was more down to an injury. The UFC should save him a place in their organization for when he returns. Jung will come back a better fighter than before and will gain another shot at UFC gold.
