Jose Aldo Remains The King
Well, American still can’t take over the Featherweight division, and while that surely hurts in a patriotic sort of way, the contest between Chad Mendes and Jose Aldo last night was one of the year’s best. For those of you who were busy, or who simply didn’t see it, try your best to watch it because it is the frontrunner for fight of the year in my book.
There was a lot of bad blood going on between Mendes and Aldo leading up to this fight, but it seemed like none of that mattered when the Octagon door closed. Both of these guys went to war and even though the cards rang out a unanimous decision for Aldo, the fight was much closer than that. Do I think the judges made the right decision by awarding Aldo the decision? I do. I guess I am just a little excited for Mendes because he really pushed the champ the entire fight. Mendes showed insane improvement in his striking as well as his conditioning. Honestly, I’m sure Mendes is disappointed in himself, but he really gave an excellent performance, dropping the champ on one occasion and tagging him multiple times throughout the fight.
So where does Aldo go now? According to Dana White, they are going to let Aldo heal up and then see the turnout of Conor McGregor’s next fight. What really bugged me about that is the fact White only mentioned McGregor’s name. He didn’t name any other Featherweights that are currently on insane winning streaks, such as Cub Swanson and others. But, White is in the business of promoting and selling fights, and right now it seems McGregor has the golden key to the kingdom.
