Mark Hunt Could Be The New UFC Heavyweight Champion
I can’t rightly describe the feeling I had when I saw that Mark Hunt would be fighting for the interim Heavyweight championship.
Hunt was tapped as a replacement when current champion Cain Velasquez injured his knee and had to pull out of his upcoming title defense against Fabricio Werdum. For those of you who have not been following the incredible comeback story of Hunt, I highly encourage to at least read his Wikipedia page, because it is one for the ages.
Now on to the important stuff: Can Hunt actually beat Werdum? I think that he can, and it isn’t because he is more talented (sorry Hunt, but it is true). The reason why I believe Hunt can beat Werdum is because every time that Hunt has stepped into the Octagon, we have seen improvement. As a guy who has been fighting his entire life, to improve after every fight is a feat that few can accomplish.
The biggest worry that Hunt needs to have is the ground game of Werdum. While Werdum is no slouch on the feet, having outstruck both Roy Nelson and Travis Browne, he is an absolute killer when it comes to grappling. While it is absolutely possible for Hunt to get submitted, I don’t think it will end up there because Hunt has shown constant improvement with his wrestling and his submission defense.
Also, let’s not forget the biggest factor going into this fight: these guys are heavyweights. By that, I mean one strike from either of these guys can put the lights out. Whether it is a win or a loss for Hunt, he still challenged for the belt long after everyone called him dead in the sport.
Well done, Hunt. Now please, go a bit further and capture that gold.
