Who Will Phil Davis Get Next After Suffocating, Ugly Victory?
I’ve always had a soft spot for Phil Davis. Maybe it’s because he went to Penn State, and seeing how that is the biggest college around me, I always rooted for him even though he is not from my hometown.
When Davis started to make headlines, everyone saw him as a one-dimensional wrestler and in my opinion, he still is. But as they say, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. The fact is that Davis’ wrestling is so good that it will get him past most top-five opponents — like it did against Glover Teixeira.
Teixeira has always been a little overrated. The guy is tough as nails and a good fighter, but his title shot was not really warranted. Who did he beat in the UFC to warrant it? Ryan Bader? Not to knock against Bader, but his name doesn’t really scream “title ready” if you ask me. Also, Bader was winning that fight before he got caught, so it was good to see Teixeira fight someone who is a serious top-five guy in the light heavyweight division like Davis.
Davis was relentless in his attack during the entire contest. Teixeira was actually defending the takedowns well, but once Davis got one, he maintained control, and that was the entire fight. Was it an ugly win for Davis? Yes, it kind of was. Davis was not able to showcase improved striking or new additions to his game. He knew he could outwrestle Teixeira, and he did.
What I am more interested, on the other hand, is seeing who Davis gets next.
