Jake Ellenberger vs. Kelvin Gastelum Is Dark Horse Fight at UFC 180
Since I’m still in mourning over Shogun Rua’s performance last night, I decided to look to the future and see what the UFC 180 card has to offer. I’m happy I did, because that card is absolutely stacked. While the heavyweight main event will undoubtedly get the most press, as it should, there are some serious sleeper fights on this card that should make some great contests. The one that may be lost in the fray is the fight between Jake Ellenberger and Kelvin Gastelum. This fight caught my attention because it seems like both fighters are heading in different directions.
Gastelum is coming off a win over Nico Musoke. The big story about that fight is that Gastelum missed weight. While it is never all right to miss weight, there are more leniencies when the fight is not that high on the card. Seeing as this upcoming bout against Ellenberger will probably be on the main card, I am very interested to see if Gastelum can make weight or not. Beyond that, Gastelum certainly looks to have a bright future in the UFC, and Ellenberger will give him the hardest test of his young career.
Ellenberger, on the other hand, was once a huge prospect who was never able to get that big win under his belt. He is coming off a loss to Robbie Lawler, which is understandable because Lawler is an animal of a different nature. This fight is by no means an easy fight for Ellenberger, but it could put him back on track after dropping two in a row. Either way, one of these guys’ careers will benefit from this fight, and I can’t wait to see which one it is.
