Sadly, just a few days after defeating Daniel Cormier in a five-round decision in the main event of UFC 182, news broke that Jon Jones has entered a drug treatment facility. Saturday’s victory over Cormier left many believing Jones is the greatest mixed martial arts fighter of all time and today’s news casts a disappointing cloud over Jones’ legacy.
“Bones” Jones tested positive for benzoylecgonine, a metabolite found in cocaine, in a random drug test on Dec. 4. Benzoylecgonine is not banned out-of-competition by the World Anti-Doping Agency, so the Nevada Athletic Commission was unable to penalize or prevent Jones from fighting Cormier as a result of the positive test.
The UFC light heavyweight champion released a statement to Yahoo Sports through his attorney:
“With the support of my family, I have entered into a drug treatment facility. I want to apologize to my fiancée, my children, as well as my mother, father, and brothers for the mistake that I made. I also want to apologize to the UFC, my coaches, my sponsors and equally important to my fans. I am taking this treatment program very seriously. Therefore at this time my family and I would appreciate privacy.”
It’s great news that Jones is seeking help for his problem, but this is terrible news for UFC just days after one of their biggest fights of the year. Hopefully Jones comes out of rehab cured of his addiction, but he will have some work to do to fix his reputation.
