After continuing his remarkable second Octagon stint by choking out the ultra-tough Tim Boetsch at UFC 183, top-10 middleweight Thales Leites has designs on his next opponent. The 33-year-old former title challenger is targeting Tim Kennedy for his next appearance. It would be an intriguing clash if it were to become a reality.
Leites has been a completely different fighter than the one-dimensional submission specialist who had a failed title challenge against then-champion Anderson Silva back in 2009. He’s added a dangerous striking game to his arsenal and has showcased previously unseen knockout power. Leites is very confident in his stand-up game and showcased his sturdy chin in his Fight of the Night triumph against Boetsch. He’s never been knocked out in 29 career contests.
The Nova Uniao product has certainly made the most of his second chance with the organization in going 5-0. He’s recorded finishes in his last three fights and is at the top of his game. Leites has secured Performance of the Night bonuses in his last two appearances. The dangerous Brazilian has also been successful against Francis Carmont, Trevor Smith, Ed Herman and Tom Watson during this impressive stretch.
The No. 8-ranked Kennedy certainly isn’t one to turn down challenges, and a matchup against Leites would represent a solid bounce-back opportunity. Kennedy is coming off a controversial knockout loss to Yoel Romero at UFC 178 and will undoubtedly be seeking out a high-profile test upon his return. Kennedy has gone 3-1 in his Octagon tenure including a dominant decision victory over Michael Bisping. He’s proven himself to be a tough out for any middleweight, and has also competed against the likes of Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza and Luke Rockhold.
Not only is Leites proving himself as one of the best middleweights in the UFC, he also seems to have done a pretty good job of playing potential matchmaker in this case. Leites against Kennedy would be a solid battle to make, and it’s a fight that the UFC should seriously consider.
