Donald Cerrone‘s latest triumph proved undoubtedly that the Colorado native is the UFC‘s preeminent cowboy. While coming off a title loss to Rafael Dos Anjos, Cerrone stepped up to welterweight and made short work of streaking Brazilian, Alex “Cowboy” Oliveira. Cerrone, the Jackson-Wink product, garnered his 29th professional victory via breathtaking transition triangle choke. Save for his two setbacks opposite 155-pound stalwart Dos Anjos, the 31-year-old has won his previous 10 fights.

With names such as No. 1 lightweight contender Eddie Alvarez, Benson Henderson, Edson Barboza, KJ Noons and Evan Dunham on his recent hit-list, “Cowboy” has set himself up nicely for a high-profile fight in the very near future.
Possible upcoming opponents for Cerrone could include former conquerors Anthony “Showtime” Pettis or Nate Diaz. Cerrone’s loss to Diaz was particularly humiliating, as the Stockton native out-struck the cowboy 238-t0-96 en route to a dominant three-round unanimous decision victory. Meanwhile, Pettis was the last man not named Rafael Dos Anjos to defeat Cerrone. Again, this setback came in crushing fashion, as Pettis folded his charge with a lightning-fast first-round knockout.
However, Cerrone may be looking for redemption against Diaz as he told Joe Rogan on The Rogan Experience podcast:
“I’m not making any excuses.” “He got in my head. Absolutely… That don’t happen anymore. It was a super lesson.”
Should either rematch fail to materialize, the winner of the upcoming Tony Ferguson and Khabib Nurmagomedov showdown could be in his sights. Nurmagomedov was the last man to defeat divisional champion Dos Anjos, however, the “Russian Eagle” hasn’t fought since. In total, the undefeated Nurmagomedov has been M.I.A. since April of 2014 due to nagging injuries.
In whatever fashion the championship picture at lightweight plays out, one thing is for certain: Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone will be squarely in the thick of things.
