This whole situation involving whether a boxing match will happen between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Conor McGregor is so weird, but intriguing. No one in the general public knows whether the two sides are just doing all of this for press or if this is something that’s in the works. It could be a completely fictitious situation or it could be one of the biggest pay-per-views of all time.
If we’re to believe what Mayweather Jr. recently said to ESNews, then it could be more serious than we think.
“If I do fight, it’s only against Conor McGregor … not against nobody else,” said Mayweather. “Because this matchup is so intriguing. You have (a boxer) against an MMA fighter – one of the best MMA fighters to ever … stand up and do it. He’s a strong fighter and when I look at his fights, he’s a little faster than I thought he was.”
Not only is Mayweather claiming that he’s seriously thinking about taking this fight, but apparently his team has already been discussing details further than the purse.
“I’m pretty sure we’re going to have a master plan to make that fight happen,” said Mayweather. “It hasn’t happened, yet, but we locked down some dates, me and my team, me and Al Haymon, me and Leonard Ellerbe. We locked down some dates, in different countries, in different cities in the United States.”
Count me as someone who really hopes that this fight happens, but I’m not expecting it to because of McGregor’s contractual obligations with the UFC. President Dana White likely won’t agree to the type of purse that was being discussed early on in which Mayweather would get upwards of $144 million while McGregor would only get $10 million.
