There’s been a lot of talk about Floyd Mayweather coming out of retirement to box current UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor. But a recent video has been released of McGregor sparring former IBO champion Chris “The Heat” Van Heerden at Box ‘N Burn in Brentwood, Calif.
Whether this sparring session was part of his regular training or actual training to possibly fight the undefeated Mayweather, the video shows that in comparison to a full-time professional boxer, McGregor displays a handful of holes in his pure boxing game.
The one round clearly shows that van Heerden is much lighter on his feet in comparison to McGregor’s plodding stalking style. When it came time to engage, there were plenty of times that McGregor would miss whereas van Heerden displayed cleaner, more accurate punches. Additionally, just how McGregor ate basic 1-2s from Nate Diaz at UFC 196, his head movement still seemed to be lackluster.
Now mind you, the IBO belt isn’t one of the higher rated belts in boxing.
If this is any indication as to where McGregor’s boxing skills are, he may have to stay at that gym for more than a year. And even then, it wouldn’t be enough to get him anywhere near the one of the greatest boxers of all time.
Only time will tell where we’ll see McGregor next. It’s either getting embarrassed by Mayweather in a boxing ring or possibly getting embarrassed by Diaz in the Octagon again.
