2012 MLS Super Draft Generation Adidas 2011 College Cup Update
Last time I listed 8 players as Generation Adidas Players. Those players were Darren Mattocks, Andrew Wenger, Kelyn Rowe, Billy Schuler, Enzo Martinez, Eric Schoenle, Chandler Hoffman, and Matt Lodge. This update will list some familiar and new faces who make my final Generation Adidas Team. This list will be updated every Monday until the College Cup Champion has been decided.
This weeks report will provide an update of my new 8 Generation Adidas Players plus list how each player has performed in the 2011 NCAA College Cup.
Darren Mattocks Forward Akron Sophomore Akron’s phenom forward Darren Mattocks continues to amaze. Mattocks scored 18 goals in the regular season as a freshman and matched that total in regular season play as a sophomore after He lost 7 players to the 2011 MLS Super Draft along with 2 other players to transfers.
People were curious to see how Mattocks responded in the 2011 NCAA College Cup without his supporting cast from last season. Akron had 3 of the top 4 2011 MLS Draft Picks so there was a lot of pressure on Mattocks to deliver. The College Cup starts with 48 teams. The top 16 seeds don’t play until Sunday.
Akron had to play on Thursday since they were not a top 16 seed. Akron went up against Northwestern on Thursday. In Mattocks first game against Northwestern on Thursday night, Mattocks managed to create constant scoring chances. Akron gained a 2 to 0 lead before Northwestern pulled with in one goal. Mattocks delivered the final nail in the coffin on Northwestern’s season with a critical goal in the 77th minute. On Sunday Akron travelled to Dallas to face #6 seed SMU. Akron won that game 3 to 2. Mattocks was essential in the Akron Zips victory as he scored 2 of the Zips 3 goals.
Akron faces another team who pulled an upset. Charlotte had to win 2 games on Thursday and Sunday. Charlotte had to beat 11 seed UAB to earn the right to face Akron. Charlotte defeated 11 seed UAB so they play Akron next Sunday for the right to go to the quarterfinals.
Mattocks has been my clear cut #1 pick ever since Louisville lost to North Carolina early in September. Mattocks play in the first two games of the 2011 College Cup convince me that its in the best interest of the Montreal Impact long term to select Mattocks. Mattocks won on Sunday to advance to the Super 16 and Wenger lost for Duke so its pretty evident at this point that Mattocks is beginning to separate himself as the top prospect in this draft. I am becoming more confident that Mattocks will be playing for Montreal this January.
I get a strong feeling that Mattocks could be the Montreal Impact’s version of Landon Donovan. Donovan just won the 2011 MLS Cup over the Houston Dynamo and Donovan scored the only goal in that classic contest. I really cannot see how the Impact pass on Mattocks.
Andrew Wenger Defenseman Duke Junior Wenger displayed excellent defensive ability in Duke’s opener to Georgia State in the College Cup.
Wenger played unbeaten New Mexico in the 2nd round on Sunday. New Mexico was a 10 seed in the College Cup despite being the #1 ranked team.
Wenger played well in the first half defensively. Wenger struggled to help Duke maintain their 1-0 lead over New Mexico. New Mexico rallied back with a 2 to 1 victory over Duke to remain unbeaten. Vancouver really likes Wenger so expect Andrew Wenger to go 2nd to Vancouver in January.
Enzo Martinez Midfielder North Carolina Junior Enzo Martinez scored 10 goals as a sophomore. Martinez had 8 goals and 10 assists in regular season this year. New England really likes Enzo Martinez and went to the North Carolina game today just to confirm what they believe.
North Carolina played their first game Sunday as the #1 team in the tournament. Martinez faces 16 seed Indiana next Sunday.
Ashton Bennett Forward Coastal Carolina Junior Ashton Bennett led the NCAA Regular Season in goals and points. Bennett had a mind boggling 21 goals, 6 assists, and 48 points in the 2011 regular season.
Bennett had 1 goal and no assists in a 4 to 3 opening round victory over Elon on Thursday. Bennett really managed to win the one on one match ups in Coastal Carolina’s game against #1 ranked North Carolina.
Bennett absolutely schooled 6 foot 4 Tar Heel center back Matt Hedges a potential top 10 pick heading into Sunday’s contest by generating 1 goal and 1 assist in a 3 to 2 loss to North Carolina who is the top ranked team in the 2011 College Cup.
Bennett looks like a player that the Toronto FC would take a huge liking to with the #4 overall selection in the 2012 MLS Super Draft.
Dillon Powers Defenseman Notre Dame Powers can play center back or defensive midfielder. I am getting a sense that Powers will go pro even though most experts believe he returns. Powers was a captain for the US Under 20 team in May.
Chivas USA will take the best available player with the 5th pick. Dillon Powers has the talent to be a top 5 pick if he declares as a Generation Adidas Player. Powers could be joining Chivas USA if he signs a Generation Adidas Deal. I really cannot see Powers dropping out of the top 5 if he declares.
Eric Schoenle Defenseman West Virginia Senior Schoenle is a versatile defensive defender. Schoenle can play center back, left back, or right back. Schoelne should be selected in the top 6 if he declares.
I have the first 7 spots of the 2012 MLS Super Draft penciled in at this point leading up to the Generation Adidas Announcements after the 2011 College Cups. 6 of those spots are Generation Adidas Players.
This Super Draft will begin once the Portland Timbers pick with the 8th selection.
Kelyn Rowe Midfielder UCLA Sophomore Rowe really declined in 2011 after posting 7 goals, 10 assists, and 24 points in 2010. He looks like he will take a huge hit in the 2012 MLS Super Draft. Despite this, I get the feeling that Rowe decides to declare as a sophomore.
Chandler Hoffman Forward UCLA Junior Hoffman scored the only goal in UCLA’s win over Delaware. Hoffman looked fabulous against Delaware.
