NASCAR is heading back to Daytona but for three drivers they’re racing for a spot in the chase.
Joey Logano, Kasey Kahne, and Ryan Newman are hoping to have a great weekend at Daytona International Speedway, maybe even looking for win. All three drivers are currently tied in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series standings in 14th place. Tied with 463 points and for the final wild card spot for the 2012 chase, Daytona will be the place to break up the tie with nine races to go.
Kahne is the current holder of the final wild card spot heading into Daytona. Kahne gained the final wild card spot after Kentucky where he finished second. He had the better finish of the three drivers last week. Kahne’s only victory of the season so far came at Charlotte for the Coca Cola 600 back in May.
Newman’s only victory came at Martinsville back in April. He fell back two spots within the standings after last week’s race. He also had a situation with Logano in Kentucky. Newmanis looking forward to get back on top if he manages to get a good finish at Daytona. Out of the three drivers he had the worst finish at Kentucky.
Logano is the only driver out of the three who is trying to qualify for his first chase. This is Logano’s fourth season competing in the cup series and the first time he is in contention for a spot in the chase. The 2009 Cup Rookie of The Year captured his first win of the Series at Pocono and his it was also his first win that was not rain shorten.
The last time Logano, Kahne and Newman were at Daytona was for the Daytona 500. Logano had the best finish between the three where he had a top ten finish and placed ninth. Newman placed 21st and Kahne finished 29th. Heading into the weekend the odds favor Khane, he averages a 17.9 finish at Daytona. Logano has a 20.9 finish meanwhile Newman has a 22.0 finish.
