Austin Dillion got himself into hot water with NASCAR again.
Dillion had won the pole position for Friday night’s Nationwide Race at Daytona but it was announced by NASCAR after the qualifying session that Dillion had been stripped off the pole. It was found that Dillion’s No.3 car had failed inspection once again.
The No.3 car was found with an illegal modification and Dillion’s qualifying round of 177.340 mph was no longer valid. NASCAR said that the No.3 car had a open cooling hose underneath the cockpit.
Ricky Stenhouse Jr. had finished second in qualifying but was awarded the pole position by NASCAR after Dillion had been penalized. Dillion will now have to start from the back of the field in 42nd position.
The penalty at Daytona is the second penalty against Dillion in one week. After winning the Nationwide race at Kentucky the No.3 car failed post race inspection. Dillion was docked six championship points and fell back to second in the standings. Other members of the No.3 Richard Childress Racing team also received penalties after the infraction at Kentucky.
