Matt Kenseth had one heck of a weekend in Kansas Speedway for the NASCAR Sprint Cup race. He started by running in the top 10 during practice. His team worked on the car to the point that he was able to not only get the pole but also set a new track record. This is the third race in a row this season that the pole winner has won the race.
Matt started the race then proceeded to run away from the field. He showed early how strong his car was. He led every lap from lap 1 to 74. The only thing that kept him from leading every lap is that other drivers got on different pit strategies.
As other drivers led the race, Matt was able to drive his car back up to the top ten. When those drivers got back on the same pit strategy Matt would take the lead back. If it wasn’t for the pit strategy calls Matt would have simply dominated the race.
As Matt dominated as his teammates had trouble. Kyle Busch kept spinning out. He saved it numerous times but the last time it was too much he hit the outside wall. He was in the way and Joey Logano had nowhere to go ending both of their days. Brian Vickers also spun out and had a rough day. Brian finished 31st and Kyle finished 38th.
At one point Martin Truex Jr. looked like he might have something for Matt. Martin led 46 laps, the second most. Matt Kenseth led 163 laps out of 267. Ricky Stenhouse Jr. finished 11th and was the highest finishing rookie.
This is Matt’s 26th Sprint Cup win tying him with Kyle Busch and NASCAR Hall of Fame candidate Fred Lorenzen for 21st all time. Jimmie Johnson leads the Sprint Cup Standing by 37 points over Kasey Kahne. Kyle Busch, Jimmie Johnson and now Matt Kenseth all have two wins and are all but locked into the Chase for the Sprint Cup.
