Last week at the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series NRA 500 at Texas Motor Speedway, Kyle Busch pulled off the complete sweep of the weekend racing. He won the Nationwide Series on Friday evening then cleaned house against Martin Truex Jr. on Saturday night. It was his second Sprint Cup win of the year as well as being his second weekend sweep. He even claimed in the post race interview that he and his team were riding a 30 feet tall wave.
Then came Kansas Speedway and the STP 400. Busch’s towering wave was dashed hard upon the rocks at a track that Busch has never been able to master over his entire Sprint Cup career. It is the only track where he doesn’t have a top five finish. The trend was continued this weekend.
Coming into this weekend with enthusiasm, the Joe Gibbs Racing driver hoped to change his reputation at this 1.5 mile track. Busch decided that he would race on Saturday in the Camping World Truck Series, in place of his Kyle Busch Motorsports driver Erik Jones, in the No. 51 truck. Then over the course of the race he wrecked and finished over 30 laps down. It was to be a bad omen for Sunday.
He did have reason for hope as he started in position five and was making ground quickly. By lap six he was in third when he spun first. His car was running loose continually through the day and Dave Rogers’ best efforts were not enough to get it back to a solid setup. When he got loose later he hit the wall and then crashed into Joey Logano, which ended both of their days. His teammate, Matt Kenseth ended up in victory lane for his second win while Busch had to walk off in his civilian attire.
While his day ended badly Busch was reticent and showed a greater maturity than in the past by keeping his comments short and lacking of profanity. Even with a bad week it still looks like Busch is headed for the Chase this year. Look for him to prove himself this time. This young driver has run the gauntlet and seriously matured.
