This weekend NASCAR made its way to Talladega Superspeedway for the Aaron’s 499, which was the first race of the year at the restrictor plate track. The track is known for the draft as well as wild late race finishes. This year’s green-white-checkered finish certainly didn’t disappoint, but even before that the Big One hit multiple times.
On lap 44, the biggest wreck of the day reared its ugly head set off by Kyle Busch. Busch was running behind Kasey Kahne in third position when he pushed the back end of Kahne’s No. 5 too much and set the entire field wrecking.
Kyle would ultimately finish 37th after expressing regret that he had started the wreck and ended Kahne’s as well as his own race prematurely. This bad finish was the third week in a row that Busch has been involved in a wreck on the track. After a sweep of the race weekend at Texas Motor Speedway it looked like Busch might be seriously contending for the Sprint Cup this year in the Chase, yet he has seemed to have picked back up the bad luck he had all of last season.
The other Busch brother Kurt Busch would also be involved in a big wreck that brought out the last caution of the day. This was kicked off by rookie Ricky Stenhouse Jr., who tried to take the racing four-wide on the outside of J.J. Yeley who then spun.
Busch was sent airborne in his strong Furniture Row Racing No. 78 car and onto the hood of Ryan Newman’s car. Busch had a top running car all day and certainly would have been competing for the win, but he just had nowhere to go on the track.
Both Busch brothers will be hoping to rebound next weekend as NASCAR heads to Darlington Raceway.
