Sprint Cup Series Needs Diversity In Schedule

One of the great aspects of NASCAR is the talent of drivers coming from different styles and series of racing. The backgrounds range from dirt racing to road course, sprint cars to Indy cars, and everything in between. The Sprint Cup Series of NASCAR needs to add more diversity to the track schedule.

With the available tracks and new Chase format, adding an extra road course would be intriguing to a Sprint Cup schedule. Road courses can give an opportunity for an unlikely driver to make the Chase, as Aj Allmendinger did at Watkins Glen in 2014. Currently, the Sprint Cup Series only has three scheduled road courses, Auto Club, Sonoma and Watkins Glen. The Xfinity series runs at Auto Club, Road America and Mid-Ohio – two that are not on the Sprint Cup schedule. The Camping World Truck Series runs one at Canadian Motorsports Park, which is exclusive to that series also.

The success at Eldora Speedway in the Camping World Truck Series and the interest shown from the drivers for the race leaves NASCAR the tough decision to add a dirt track to the Sprint Cup schedule. This would be a challenging change to all drivers and teams, but this addition to the schedule would add diversity and a connection to the fans of local dirt tracks across the country.

On a final note, NASCAR may have to purchase a track and develop it to accommodate a series stop. An investment in non-scheduled tracks for future series stops will add new communities the experience of an exciting NASCAR weekend and ensure the evolution in the NASCAR schedule and sport.
