The way 2014 panned out with two teams dominating the field, a competitive rivalry can’t help but exist between Team Hendrick and Team Penske. Winning 24 of 36 races combined, these teams have a keen sense of what it takes to win. Seeing each other in victory lane week-in and week-out had to start to get under the skin of the drivers and their respective teams.
The most wins category is nice to have, but winning the championship is the goal. Neither accomplished that feat in 2014 to both teams disappointment. Team Hendrick finished with 13 wins and Team Penske with 11, but the Hendrick team does have twice the driver which probably sits nicely with Penske’s two drivers.
The boiling point in 2014 for this rivalry definitely was the contact between Jeff Gordon and Brad Keselowski at Texas during the Chase. It only seemed right the two teams collide in an important moment of the year to inherently take each other out on the track and in the pits. When the 24 car parked next to the 2 car there was no mistaking what was to come. The teammates may not be coming to help each other in a melee, but they have helped each other on the track at times.
Maybe it is just an old Chevy vs. Ford election that has been going on for decades, but the unspoken rivalry between Hendrick and Penske is alive and may grow with the continued success of both teams.
