Entering 2015, Greg Biffle is at a bit of a career crossroads. In his 12 full seasons with Roush, now known as Roush Fenway Racing, Biffle has had fellow veteran drivers like Matt Kenseth, Carl Edwards even Mark Martin to lean on.
But with Edwards’ departure for Joe Gibbs Racing this season and surrounded by young drivers Ricky Stenhouse Jr. and Trevor Bayne, there’s no doubt that Biffle is the man in Roush’s stable of drivers. The only problem is that over the past couple of years, Roush and Biffle haven’t shown the speed they used to have.
Biffle, now 44 years old, has some tough decisions to make over the next few years until his recent contract runs out at the end of 2016. Does he stay with Roush Fenway and trust that the company will find speed in their Fords once again? Does he leave for another race team, following in the footsteps of Edwards and Kenseth? Does he even think about retirement?
The first step in answering those questions will begin this season. The fact is, Biffle won 14 Sprint Cup races over his first six full-time years with Roush, highlighted by a second-place finish in points in 2005. However, Biffle has won just five races over the last six seasons, with a high finish of fifth in points in 2012. In those six seasons, Biffle went winless three times including last season, the only three winless seasons over those 12 years.
Now, while trying to resurrect his own career, he will have to serve as mentor and leader to Stenhouse Jr. and especially Bayne, who is entering his rookie season. Comeback seasons the likes of which Jeff Gordon and Dale Earnhardt Jr. had last year are certainly an encouragement, but the fact remains that unless Roush Fenway can find the speed it once had, it may well be another long season for not only Biffle, but his young teammates as well.
