Despite the destruction of Hurricane Sandy, the regular-season opener between the New York Knicks and Brooklyn Nets will go on as scheduled.
There was some concern that the game would be postponed after NBA spokesman Tim Frank tweeted that the league is “assessing the situation”. However, he sent out email on Tuesday night addressing the issue and said the game wouldn’t be postponed.
The Nets’ brand new $1 billion Barclays Center didn’t sustain any damage, but the tri-state area suffered a shutdown of transportation. This was thought to be an issue because the arena is near major subway and Long Island Railroad station and they are anticipating that fans will use public transportation to get to the game.
Another concern was if fans decided to drive to the arena instead. The area surrounding the arena was not meant to deal with major traffic.
Aside from the Boston Celtics and Miami Heat match-up on Tuesday night, the Knicks and Nets’ game is thought to be the most anticipated season-opener.
The Nets acquired Joe Johnson in a trade with the Atlanta Hawks and they were able to resign Deron Williams, Gerald Wallace and Brook Lopez.
The Knicks, who already had Carmelo Anthony, Amar’e Stoudemire and Tyson Chandler, acquired Raymond Felton and Kurt Thomas from the Portland Trail Blazers, acquired Marcus Camby from the Houston Rockets and signed free agents Jason Kidd, Pablo Prigioni, Ronnie Brewer and Rasheed Wallace.
With the power out at their East Rutherford N.J., training facility, the Nets will hold their Wednesday afternoon practice at the Barclays center. Meanwhile, the Knicks practiced on Tuesday night at their Greenburgh N.Y., training facility and will practice there again during Wednesday morning before taking on the Nets Thursday night. The game will be nationally televised on TNT at 7 p.m.
