The San Antonio Spurs are the NBA‘s best team at home this season. With 18 wins at AT&T Center in 2012-3 the Spurs are making a push at the Western Conference’s number one seed. Currently a three seed, this aging and experienced squad has been there and done that in terms of postseason and regular season basketball.
Perhaps it is the lovely home-cooking in San Antonio or the familiarity with the arena but, the Spurs are doing something right at home–the club has beaten teams like Oklahoma City Thunder and the Memphis Grizzlies at home this season. If the Spurs can continue to beat top teams at home they will have no problem doing so once the playoffs begin.
I have no doubt this Spurs team in particular can win on the road as well, as they are a more than serviceable 14-9 away from the AT&T Center.
With teams like the Thunder having such a home-court advantage it’s important for the Spurs to have an equally sizable advantage at home. It would be a spectacle to see both the Thunder and the Spurs use those advantages in a playoff series to decide who will win the Western Conference. In my mind, that would be one of the best series’ in the history of the NBA.
Time will tell if head coach Gregg Popovich can have his team playing at such a high level at home for the rest of 2013 however, 18-2 at home is a great accomplishment for any team.
