With the trade deadline quickly approaching, one of the hottest NBA rumors over the last few weeks has involved the Memphis Grizzlies possibly dealing Rudy Gay–who would be a great addition for just about any team in the league. One team that appears to be extremely interested in landing the star forward–the Toronto Raptors.
The Raptors have shown signs of making big moves before the trade deadline and one possible scenario has them acquiring Gay from the Grizzlies, but it looks like they may need to involve a third team to make the deal happen. Toronto has made it clear they would like to deal point guard Jose Calderon in order to get rid of the $10.6 million left on his contract, so if they could find a team interested–this three-team trade could happen.
Gay is currently in the middle of his seventh season with the Grizzlies and while he’s been a great contributor throughout his career, the team realizes the chances of losing him to free agency in the future–which is why they would prefer to get something now instead of just losing him in general down the road. Gay’s numbers may be down a bit from the last couple of seasons as he’s averaging 17.2 points per game to go along with 5.9 rebounds, but teams have to take into consideration the amount of talent surrounding Memphis as a team.
If a team focused most of their attention around building the team with Gay–there’s a good chance those numbers would immediately increase for the forward. The Raptors appear to be ready to do whatever it takes to make this deal happen–so it should be interesting to see if anything takes place over the next few days.
