The Charlotte Bobcats lost another game last night as they fell to the Brooklyn Nets 99-78, and now their record is at 13-48. At this point in the season, the only thing the Bobcats have to look forward to is the 2013 NBA draft. Maybe the Bobcats will find a difference maker in this year’s draft but if not, there is always free agency.
It is rumored that the Bobcats are one team that could acquire center Greg Oden this summer. Oden, the former No. 1-overall pick, has not played in the NBA since the 2009-10 season, but he is looking to make a comeback in the summer. Oden reportedly won’t have any contract talks with teams until July so that he can focus on his rehabilitation.
The Bobcats could definitely use Oden because they are in desperate need of a defensive force in the interior. In the 82 games he has played in his career, Oden has averaged 9.4 PPG, 7.3 RPG, and 1.4 BPG to go along with his 57 percent field goal percentage. He is not necessarily a bust, but it’s just that he has never been healthy enough to stay on the floor.
Oden is only 25 and stands 7-foot, 285 pounds, so there is still some upside to him. If he could prove to stay healthy, he could be a great pick up for any team.
The Bobcats should have plenty of cap space this off-season, especially if they amnesty Tyrus Thomas, and they might be able to make Oden the best offer he could get anywhere.
Charlotte should definitely take a chance on Oden because when healthy he is already better than the likes of Brendan Haywood, Brandon Mullens, and Bismack Biyombo. The Bobcats would not have anything to lose in acquiring Oden, and if he can stay healthy, he could finally give the Bobcats the strong interior presence they have been lacking for quite some time.
Only time will tell if the Bobcats can get Oden, but between the draft and Oden, the team will definitely have some options this summer.
