New Mexico small forward Tony Snell has made the decision to forgo his final year of collegiate eligibility and declare for the 2013 NBA Draft. At 6-foot-7, Snell has decent size for the wing position and his athleticism allows him to take his talents to the next level. Snell showed the ability to turn things up at various moments, going off for 25+ on three separate occasions. Snell boosted his potential right from the get-go this season, as two of those three 25+ point performances came in the Lobos’ first three contests this past season.
Snell can penetrate and get to the basket, but he is very comfortable in catching and spotting up for three. Give his success this past season, Snell can be considered a more on-the-rise prospect, but it remains to be seen just how well his game will translate to the NBA level. Either way, Snell should hear his name called this upcoming June, somewhere around the mid-to-late portion of the second round.
Strengths: Snell has good size for the wing position, measuring in at 6-foot-7. He is not afraid to step out and shoot the three ball, having attempted nearly five per game this past season. Snell has continuously improved on the offensive end, even in terms of penetrating the ball and getting the line.
Weaknesses: Snell needs to expand his physical features as he weighs in at only 200 lbs. Snell has a good upside in terms of his athleticism, but that didn’t help him much on the glass despite his 6-foot-7 frame. Snell needs to be able to defend stronger wings at the NBA level, so he needs to build on his physicality.
